Glycol-Based Thermal Backup Cooling System – DescriptionDefinition:
Glycol Thermal Backup System uses a chilled glycol solution (a water and glycol mixture) to maintain cooling in cold storage rooms when the primary refrigeration system fails or power is lost. How it Works:
  • Glycol (commonly propylene glycol or ethylene glycol) is a liquid that resists freezing and can retain cold temperatures for a long time.
  • The glycol solution is chilled to a very low temperature during normal operations.
  • When power fails:
    • The cold glycol continues to circulate (either naturally or via battery-powered pumps).
    • The glycol absorbs heat from the cold room, keeping the temperature low without active refrigeration.
Main Components:
  • Glycol Storage Tank: Stores chilled glycol solution.
  • Glycol Cooling Coils or Plates: Installed inside the cold room walls, floor, or ceiling.
  • Temperature Sensors: Monitor the internal temperature.
  • Control Panel: Automatically switches to glycol backup mode when power fails.
  • Battery Backup Pump (optional): To circulate glycol if natural convection is not enough.
Advantages:
  • Non-toxic and food-safe (if using Propylene Glycol).
  • Long cooling duration depending on the tank size and initial temperature.
  • Simple system, low maintenance compared to compressed gas systems.
  • No need for pressurized gas handling (safer than CO₂).
  • Can be designed for both short-term and long-term backups.
Typical Applications:
  • Cold rooms for fruits, vegetables, dairy, pharmaceuticals.
  • Ice cream storage rooms.
  • Any cold storage where moderate backup time is needed.
Important Notes:
  • Glycol concentration must be properly set (usually 30% to 40% glycol mixed with water).
  • If the mixture is too dilute, it may freeze.
  • If using battery pumps, battery maintenance is important.
In Short:Glycol-based backup systems offer a safe, reliable, and efficient thermal backup solution for
